Reduce Traffic Noise in City Homes: The Best Wall and Window Solutions
What actually works on a road-facing flat, in the order an acoustic engineer would specify it.
The complaint almost always arrives the same way. A family moves into a new flat on a main road, lives with it for a month, and then calls to say the bedroom is fine during the day but impossible at four in the morning, when a single truck downshifting at the signal wakes everyone. They have already bought heavy drapes from a furnishing shop. They have already asked the builder about the windows. Nothing moved the needle, and by then they are convinced the problem is unsolvable.
It is solvable, but only if the work is done in the right order. Traffic noise is not one sound. It is a broad spectrum that runs from tyre roar and horns in the mid frequencies down to engine and exhaust energy well below 200 Hz, and the low end is what travels furthest, passes most easily through light construction, and is least affected by soft furnishings. Most failed retrofits fail because someone treated a blocking problem with an absorbing product.
Where is the noise actually getting in?
Before specifying anything, walk the room with the windows shut and listen at the perimeter. In a typical city flat the ranking is predictable. Windows come first, and they are often responsible for up to 50% of outdoor noise leakage, because glass is thin, frames are light, and the opening sash rarely seals along its whole length. The road-facing wall comes second. The entrance door and the gaps around service points come third, and they matter more than their size suggests.
That ranking should decide your budget. Spending heavily on the wall while leaving a sliding window with a 3 mm gap along the meeting stile is the single most common mistake we see on site. The weakest element sets the outcome, and the flanking path always wins.
Why does a brick wall still let the road through?
Standard concrete or brick walls usually rate STC 35 to 40. That sounds respectable until you stand behind one on an arterial road. Rating a wall tells you how it performs as a sealed laboratory specimen. In a real flat the same wall carries conduit chases, junction boxes, an air conditioner sleeve and a plaster finish of varying thickness, and each of those drops the effective performance.
The fix is mass, and mass that is limp rather than stiff. This is where SoundBlanket Mass Loaded Vinyl earns its place. What goes into a wall that actually works?
A road-facing wall build-up is genuinely sequential. Each layer depends on the one behind it being continuous, so the order is not negotiable.

Lay the barrier
SoundBlanket MLV goes on first, directly against the masonry or across the studs, behind drywall or plaster. Overlap and seal every joint. A barrier with an open seam is not a barrier, and a 2% open area will cost you more than the whole product gains you.

Deal with the low frequencies

Finish the surface
Once the outside is blocked, the room itself needs treating or it will sound hard and hollow. Echsorbix PET felt panels run NRC 0.30 at 9 mm to 0.60 at 24 mm and take a finish that suits a bedroom. Where the brief calls for something softer and more absorbent, fabric wrapped panels reach NRC 0.90 on a rockwool core.

Are the windows still the real problem?
Usually, yes. A wall upgraded to STC 55 next to an untreated single-glazed window will deliver almost nothing you can hear. Two measures matter here. Double glazing, with two panes separated by an air gap, raises window performance substantially and is the right call for road-facing bedrooms. Soundproof curtains then close the remaining gap. They are rated STC 30, built from multi-layered 4500 GSM fabric at NRC 0.20, and block up to 80% of traffic noise. They are also the only measure on this list that can be installed in an afternoon, which matters when a family needs to sleep tonight.
Pair them. Double glazing handles the structure-borne and high-frequency path, the curtain covers the frame and reveals, and the two together are worth more than either alone.
If you can only do one thing this week, seal the window, then hang the curtain. Neither requires the room to be stripped, and both are reversible in a rented flat.
What did a Mumbai high-rise actually gain?
A recent project in a Mumbai high-rise is a fair illustration. The occupants were losing sleep to persistent honking and construction noise, and work-from-home calls were being interrupted. Which small gaps undo the whole job?
Every job we have had to revisit failed at a detail, not at a material. These are the ones worth checking before the contractor leaves.
- Electrical outlets: back boxes open straight into the wall cavity. Acoustic putty pads close them.
- Entrance and internal doors: hollow leaves leak corridor noise around the whole perimeter. EPDM perimeter seals and bottom sweeps close the gap.
- Window frames: silicone or EPDM seals stop the whistling that appears when the wind is up.
- False ceilings: in a multi-storey block, BassBloc above the ceiling damps footfall and noise from the flat upstairs.
Why insist on tested materials?
Because a number on a website is not a number on a test report. What should you do first?
Start with a survey, not a purchase. Spend ten minutes in the room at the worst hour of the night and identify which of the three paths, window, wall or door, is dominant. If it is the window, seal and curtain it first and reassess. If the wall is clearly carrying low-frequency energy, plan the MLV and BassBloc build-up properly and do it once, because opening a finished wall twice costs more than the materials. And before ordering, ask for the test reports. Any supplier who cannot send them is telling you something useful.
