Layered Acoustics for Busy Shared Workspaces

AWFIS partnered with MMT Acoustix to improve acoustic comfort in its high-activity co-working centres. The focus was on controlling echo in open-plan areas, reducing footstep and chair-movement noise, and improving inter-floor isolation without major civil changes.

We deployed a layered system combining acoustic ceiling baffles, acoustic carpets and SoundBlanket® 25 as an underlay beneath the flooring. Across 2950 m² of floor area and 1550 m² of treated ceiling, this strategy delivered quieter, more comfortable work floors with noticeably better speech clarity and reduced impact noise.

AWFIS centres operate at high occupancy with frequent movement, calls and collaboration. This led to several recurring acoustic issues:

Why treat both the ceiling and the floor in a co-working space?

Because they are two different noise problems. The carpet and underlay handle impact noise from footsteps, chair movement and dropped objects, which absorption overhead does nothing about.

What does SoundBlanket 25 underlay do beneath the floor finish?

It adds a resilient mass layer between the finish and the slab so footfall and chair movement are damped at source rather than radiating into the floor below. In a multi-storey co-working centre this is what stops the floor above being audible.

Why baffles and clouds rather than a full acoustic ceiling?

Because co-working interiors usually expose their services deliberately. Baffles and clouds deliver the absorption area needed while leaving the ceiling visually open, which is why they suit this design language and a full suspended ceiling does not.

Can this system be rolled out across multiple centres?

That was the design intent. The build-up is standardised so it can be repeated across locations while adapting coverage to each floor plate. Send the drawings, the room volumes and the target NRC or STC, and the system is specified against those figures with test reports issued alongside the supply.
