Long-Run Pipeline Noise Control in Oil & Gas

Saudi Aramco required a robust acoustic solution to minimise radiated noise from critical pipeline sections running near noise-sensitive operational zones. MMT Acoustix supplied SoundBlanket® 60, a high-density soundproofing membrane, installed as an external wrap over approximately 6 km of pipeline. The result was a significant reduction in airborne and structure-borne noise, while maintaining access for inspection and maintenance.

Oil & Gas Infrastructure / Pipeline Noise Control / Outdoor & Industrial

01 / The brief

Controlling Noise from Long Pipeline Runs

High-velocity flow, changes in direction and inline equipment can generate sustained noise along pipelines. For this project, Aramco needed a continuous noise control solution that could:

Pipeline wrapped with SoundBlanket 60 for noise isolation
  • Provide measurable reduction in pipeline radiated noise over several kilometres.

  • Be compatible with existing pipe supports and expansion allowances.

  • Withstand outdoor temperature variations, sand and UV exposure (with suitable jacketing by client/contractor).

  • Allow access for inspection, maintenance and future modification.

02 / The approach

Continuous SoundBlanket® 60 Wrap for 6 km of Pipeline

Reduce radiated noise from long pipeline runs and localised hotspots, while keeping the system maintainable, inspectable and suitable for harsh desert conditions.

  • 01

    Design & Sizing

    • Selected SoundBlanket® 60 configuration for effective transmission loss.
    • Roll widths and lengths planned to minimise on-site cutting.
    • Detailing defined for straight runs, bends and support locations.
  • 02

    Wrap & Overlap System

    • SoundBlanket® 60 applied as a circumferential wrap around the pipeline.
    • Controlled overlap and banding to avoid acoustic leaks.
    • Modular segments for easy removal and reinstallation if required.
  • 03

    Interfaces & Hotspots

    • Special attention to valves, flanges and support points.
    • Detailing designed to reduce flanking paths and localised noise.
    • Coordination with site team for compatibility with any outer jacketing system.

03 / Products and Installation

SoundBlanket® 60 for Industrial Pipeline Noise

  • SoundBlanket® 60

High-density soundproofing membrane designed as a flexible acoustic barrier for industrial and infrastructure applications.

  • Roll-Based Supply

Supplied in roll form for efficient coverage of long pipeline runs, minimising on-site waste and installation time.

  • Banding & Fixing

Compatible with standard industrial banding and support systems, allowing secure attachment around the pipe circumference.

  • Durability & Service

Flexible construction supports future removal, inspection and reinstallation as part of long-term maintenance cycles.

04 / Outcome

Quieter Pipeline Corridor with Maintainable Design

  • Reduced Radiated Noise

Noticeable reduction in perceived noise levels along the 6 km treated pipeline section.

  • Improved Environmental Control

Better compliance with internal noise targets around operational and monitoring areas.

  • Serviceable System

Wrap design keeps the line accessible for inspection and maintenance without complete system replacement.

What made it work

Industrial Acoustics for Oil & Gas Infrastructure

  • Approx. 6 km of pipeline treated using SoundBlanket® 60 wrap system.
  • Continuous pipeline noise control concept instead of isolated spot treatments.
  • Flexible, maintainable acoustic barrier compatible with oil & gas maintenance practices.
  • Supports environmental noise improvement without altering core process equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What was the scope of the Saudi Aramco pipeline project?

Approximately 6 km of exposed pipeline in the Riyadh region wrapped with SoundBlanket 60, a high-density soundproofing membrane in roll form, with an overlap and banding system and detailing around supports, elbows and flanges.

Why do pipelines radiate noise?

High-velocity flow, changes in direction and inline equipment such as valves and reducers generate turbulence, and the pipe wall then radiates that energy as sound along its whole length. Because the source is distributed rather than a single point, treatment has to be continuous to be effective.

Why a continuous wrap rather than treating hotspots only?

Because an untreated section radiates and undoes the sections either side of it. Acoustic lagging works on the principle that the wrap is unbroken, which is why the detailing at supports, elbows and flanges matters as much as the straight runs.

How does the system remain maintainable?

The overlap and banding system allows sections to be opened for inspection and reinstated without cutting the wrap, which is a requirement in oil and gas where pipework must remain inspectable. Detailing at flanges is designed around access rather than sealing it in.

Is the material suitable for desert conditions?

It is specified for outdoor industrial exposure, with the wrap and banding chosen for heat, UV and sand conditions over a long service life rather than for indoor use.

Who manufactures pipeline acoustic lagging in India?

MMTPL (Mahabir Multi Tech Private Limited) manufactures the full range at its Palwal plant in Haryana, India, and supplies architects, consultants and turnkey contractors in India and 25+ export markets.
