Acoustic Control for a National Space Mission

MMT Acoustix partnered with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to support the Chandrayaan-2 mission by improving the acoustics of its mission control room. This high-tension environment demanded clear communication, reduced echo and fire-safe materials around sensitive equipment.

Using UL 94 fire-rated, high-density Pyramid Acoustic Foam, we helped transform the control room into an acoustically optimised workspace where scientists and engineers can focus, collaborate and make critical decisions with clarity during mission operations.

01 / The brief

Clear Communication in a High-Stress Control Room

The Chandrayaan-2 mission control room is a precision-driven space where teams monitor and manage critical operations in real time. The acoustic challenges included:

ISRO Chandrayaan-2 mission control room acoustic treatment
  • High Echo Levels

Reflective surfaces in the control room caused noticeable reverberation, affecting speech clarity.

  • Sharp High-Frequency Sounds

Equipment noise and reflections created harsh, fatiguing high-frequency peaks.

  • Safety-Critical Environment

Any solution had to be fire-safe and compatible with sensitive electronic systems.

02 / The approach

Fire-Rated Acoustic Treatment for Mission Readiness

Deliver a controlled, low-echo acoustic environment in the control room that enhances speech intelligibility and concentration while fully complying with ISRO’s safety and technical performance standards.

  • 01

    High-Density Absorption

    • Supplied Pyramid Acoustic Foam with a density of 50 kg/m³ for robust, long-term performance.
    • Selected 75 mm thickness to effectively tame reflections and high-frequency build-up.
    • Optimised to reduce speech smearing and improve overall acoustic comfort for operators.
  • 02

    Strategic Panel Layout

    • Panels placed on key reflective surfaces to break flutter echo and shorten reverberation time.
    • Layout designed to avoid interference with displays, instrumentation and control equipment.
    • Maintained clear sightlines and operational ergonomics within the control room.
  • 03

    Safety & Compliance

    • Used UL 94 fire-rated material suitable for sensitive, mission-critical environments.
    • Ensured the solution aligned with ISRO’s safety and performance requirements.
    • Provided a low-maintenance, durable acoustic treatment suitable for continuous operation.

03 / Products and Installation

Technical Foam for Critical Acoustics & Safety

  • Pyramid Acoustic Foam

High-density, 75 mm-thick Pyramid Acoustic Foam designed for strong high-frequency absorption and echo control in technically demanding spaces.

  • UL 94 Fire Rating

Foam tested and certified to UL 94 fire standards, making it suitable for installations around critical equipment and control infrastructure.

  • Optimised Panel Layout

Precise placement strategy to treat key reflection points while preserving access, visibility and operation of mission-critical consoles and displays.

04 / Outcome

Acoustic Clarity in a High-Tension Mission Space

  • Improved Speech Intelligibility

Echo and reverberation were significantly reduced, supporting clear, continuous communication between scientists and engineers during mission operations.

  • Controlled High-Frequency Noise

Sharp high-frequency peaks were effectively tamed, creating a more focused and less fatiguing acoustic environment in the control room.

  • Mission-Ready Safety & Performance

The solution met ISRO’s fire safety and performance expectations, delivering a reliable acoustic upgrade appropriate for a national space mission.

Frequently Asked Questions

What did MMT Acoustix supply to ISRO?

Pyramid acoustic foam at 50 kg/m3 density and 75 mm thickness, UL 94 fire rated, for echo control and high-frequency noise reduction in the Chandrayaan-2 mission control room.

Why does a mission control room need acoustic treatment?

Because it is a high-stress environment where verbal communication has to be unambiguous. A reverberant control room smears speech and forces raised voices, which raises the background further. Controlling reverberation is what keeps commands intelligible under pressure.

Why was fire rating critical on this project?

Because a mission control room is filled with electronics and is occupied continuously during operations. The UL 94 rating was a condition of the specification, and it constrained the material choice as tightly as the acoustic requirement did.

What NRC does pyramid acoustic foam achieve?

NRC 0.90 at 50 mm, tested to ASTM C423. The 75 mm grade used here extends absorption further down in frequency, since absorption at lower frequencies requires depth.

Can MMT Acoustix supply to defence and space facilities?

Yes. MMTPL supplies government, defence and public sector projects with the compliance pack such tenders require: ASTM and EN or ISO test reports, fire classification certificates, manufacturer authorisation and statutory registration documents.

Who manufactured the acoustic foam used by ISRO?

MMTPL (Mahabir Multi Tech Private Limited) manufactures the full range at its Palwal plant in Haryana, India, and supplies architects, consultants and turnkey contractors in India and 25+ export markets.
