02 / How to read these

Read the report, not the headline figure

Each report states the exact sample, thickness and mounting condition tested. A figure measured on one thickness or one mounting method does not carry over to another. Three things worth checking before you quote a number in a specification:

    ThicknessIt changes the result

    • PET felt is NRC 0.30 at 9 mm and 0.60 at 24 mm. Same material, different number.
    • MLV is reported per thickness for the same reason, which is why there are four separate STC reports.
  • 02

    MountingAir gap matters

    • A panel tested with an air cavity behind it absorbs more than the same panel fixed flat to a wall.
    • A 9 mm felt facing over a 20 mm BassBloc® backing reaches NRC 0.90 because of the depth behind it.
  • 03

    Absorption is not isolationTwo different jobs

    • NRC describes how much sound a surface absorbs inside a room.
    • STC describes how much sound a construction blocks between rooms. A high NRC says nothing about blocking.

03 / The standards

What each test method actually measures

  • ASTM C423 and EN ISO 354

    Sound absorption measured in a reverberation room. Produces absorption coefficients per frequency band and the single-number NRC. Used for felt panels, foam, wood wool, slats and curtains.

  • ASTM E90 and ASTM E413

    Airborne sound transmission loss through a partition, measured between two rooms. E90 is the measurement, E413 converts it into the STC rating. Used for SoundBlanket® membranes and wall build-ups.

  • ASTM E84

    Surface burning characteristics, reported as flame spread index and smoke developed index. Frequently named in North American and Gulf project specifications.

  • OEKO-TEX® Standard 100

    Textile certification confirming the material has been tested for harmful substances. Relevant where fabric or felt is specified in schools, healthcare and residential interiors.

04 / The system behind it

Testing is a process here, not a one-time exercise

Manufacturing runs at the Palwal plant in Haryana under an ISO 9001:2015 quality management system.

  • Third-party testing. Certified figures come from independent laboratories. The in-house lab is used for development and batch checks, never for the published certified values.
  • Batch traceability. Material is tracked by batch, density and specification, so a consultant can tie what arrives on site to the batch that was tested.
  • Re-testing. Long-running products are re-tested and revalidated so figures stay true to current production.
  • On-site validation. Where a project needs it, we support site measurements with the consultant to correlate lab data with field performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What standards are MMT Acoustix products tested to?

Absorption is tested to ASTM C423 and EN ISO 354, transmission loss to ASTM E90, and surface burning to ASTM E84 with EN 13501-1 where a European classification is specified. UL 94 and UL GREENGUARD apply to the specific products that carry them.

What is the difference between ASTM C423 and ASTM E90?

They measure opposite properties. ASTM C423 measures sound absorption in a reverberation room and produces the NRC figure. ASTM E90 measures airborne sound transmission loss through a partition and produces the STC rating. A high NRC says nothing about how much sound a material blocks.

Are the published figures third-party tested?

The certified values are third-party laboratory tested. The in-house R&D lab is used for development and batch checking rather than for the published certified figures. Where a value is an in-house or indicative figure, it is labelled as such rather than presented as certified.

What is batch traceability and why does it matter?

It means a supplied batch can be traced back to its production run and its test record. On a project this is what lets a consultant verify that the material delivered to site is the material that was tested, which a generic datasheet cannot demonstrate.

What documentation is provided for a tender or submittal?

Test reports against the standard named in the specification, fire classification certificates, UL and GREENGUARD certification where applicable, manufacturer authorisation, and statutory registration documents, issued together as a compliance pack.

Can test reports be issued for a specific project?

Yes. Reports are issued alongside the supply, matched to the products and grades actually specified, and on-site validation can be arranged where the project requires performance confirmed in place.
